What tax bracket am I actually in?

What's the difference between marginal and effective rate?Marginal is the rate on your last dollar — what a raise or extra side income is taxed at. Effective is total tax ÷ total income, the average you actually pay. People conflate them all the time.
2025 federal brackets (single)10% to $11,925 · 12% to $48,475 · 22% to $103,350 · 24% to $197,300 · 32% to $250,525 · 35% to $626,350 · 37% above. Married filers are roughly double at each step.
Why does my effective rate look so much lower than my bracket?Because lower income fills the lower brackets first. At $80k single you're in the 22% bracket but your effective rate is ~15.6% — the 10% and 12% bands were filled before the 22% band.
Is this the whole tax picture? No — it's the federal ordinary-income tax on taxable income. Standard deduction, deductions, credits, state tax and FICA are separate. Use it for bracket awareness, not filing.
